The Dali Phantom S-80 is the most compact in-wall speaker in the series. With its 8-inch bass and midrange woofer working in combination with the rotary hybrid tweeter module, it delivers clear and well-defined sound reproduction, including amazing bass performance.

Wide dispersion

Wide dispersion

All Dali speakers are designed around the principle of wide dispersion. This involves off-axis optimization of sound reproduction. The technology is perfect for use with installation speakers, as they are always mounted against the wall or ceiling.

slim case

slim case

One of the goals of the Phantom S models is to create a high-fidelity in-wall speaker with a slim profile that allows maximum flexibility when installing. This has been achieved by keeping the depth of the box at just 103mm, which will fit on virtually any standard wall.

SMC

SMC technology

SMC (Advanced Soft Magnetic Compound), which eliminates the variation of flow force at the magnet separation. Reduces distortion to a minimum compared to conventional drivers.

Magnetic grid

The magnetic floating front grille forms the visual presence of the Phantom S speaker. The discreet, simple yet modern design is non-intrusive and, at the same time, pleasing to the eye.

The relative compactness of the Phantom S-80 makes it perfect for placement in any position of your sound system. Front, center, rear or in high positions. The compact and slim case offers a full frequency response similar to that of a column speaker, but without sacrificing valuable living room space.

Delivers uncompromised in-wall sound performance using well-proven speaker technologies. This includes the brand's signature wood grain cones, low-loss rubber surrounds, solid MDF front baffle, Dali's signature hybrid tweeter module and innovative, superior magnetic design including an SMC polarized piece.

All models are built around a rotating hybrid tweeter module making it easy to install for any sound use: be it stereo, center channel or surround.

The 8" wood fiber main woofer has been optimized for both bass and midrange performance. Working in combination with the rotating hybrid tweeter module, it delivers well-defined and clear sound reproduction, including surprising bass performance. This ensures that the Dali Phantom S-180 truly stands out from the crowd.

The ultra slim 103mm case design. Fits on almost any standard wall.

Box design

The Phantom S-80's compact design fits into most standard walls. It was quite a challenge to build such a box with such a shallow depth, only 103 mm. and at the same time achieve the perfect interior space for the woofer.

The box is constructed of solid MDF which maintains the easy-to-use bolt and terminal clamping system. The front of the Phantom S-80 elegantly integrates with the wall from the wraparound extruded aluminum frame, and the magnetically mounted front grille forms the visual presence of Dali's Phantom S series.

The discreet, simple, but modern design is non-intrusive and, at the same time, pleasing to the eye.

SMC

Thanks to its superior precision and minimal distortion, the SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) magnetic system originally developed for Dali's Epicon series has been chosen for the base of the main woofer of the Phantom S-80.

SMC has the unique ability to offer very high magnetic conductivity and very low electrical conductivity thereby dramatically lowering the effects of hysteresis and eddy currents around the polarized part. In Christian: drastically lowering the level of distortion. At the same time it offers all the desired virtues of a good magnetic system.

By wrapping the SMC magnetized piece with aluminum rings and a 1,5" quad-layer voice coil, optimal control, low distortion, and high power handling are achieved. The low-loss surround and cone structure are optimized for midrange performance, as is the dust cover. The smaller-than-usual dust cover has been arched outward as part of optimizing the woofer's depth.

All of this combined delivers high-bandwidth playback with incredible detail and the ability to display well-controlled bass and midrange reproduction.

SMC

Drivers

The specially developed 8" woofer used in the Phantom S-80 has been designed and optimized to deliver exceptional bass and midrange performance. The heart of the woofer has been based on the SMC magnet system developed for the Epicon series. SMC was chosen for its unique ability to drastically lower distortion levels.

Offering 70% more surface area, the 8" woofer is able to move more air and deliver higher sound pressure at very low frequencies compared to a traditional 6.5" woofer. All while still delivering the detailed, rich midrange and full frequency response of a traditional floorstanding speaker.

The rotating hybrid tweeter module in the Dali Phantom S-80 is the perfect solution for high frequencies, combining a soft dome tweeter with a ribbon tweeter. This ensures amazing reproduction and high frequency dispersion that surpasses other tweeter technologies.

Both the soft dome and ribbon tweeters are free of artifacts (e.g. resonances and high Q peaks) within their working space. The hybrid tweeter module offers extremely smooth and wide dispersion, one of Dali's hallmarks. Even the details on the front plate of the tweeter module are designed for optimal horizontal dispersion.

The features of the soft dome tweeter are a low resonant frequency, high power handling, extreme excursions, and exceptional handling of high sound pressure levels.

The recorded magneto-static ribbon tweeter is a true master of horizontal high frequency distribution, and a superb companion to the soft dome tweeter's unique ability to reproduce frequencies from 2 kHz and above.

Drivers

Installation

When mounting the Phantom S-80 on your wall, the ribbon tweeter should be at ear height. Therefore, it was decided to "flip" the speaker and swap the positions of the tweeter and woofer modules. This way, we can achieve a more traditional mounting height in line with the TV, rather than below it.

Mounted this way, it has been observed that they actually sound better. The integration with the room and, mainly, with the floor, improves, and the bass performance is better.

The hybrid tweeter module in the Phantom S-80 has also been flipped upside down to keep the dome tweeter close to the midrange woofer. This ensures optimal transfer from the woofer to the part of the tweeter that handles the lower frequencies. The physical distance between these drivers is optimized to obtain the best sum of woofer and tweeter output.

When mounting the Phantom S-80 horizontally as a center channel, be sure to place the ribbon tweeter as close to ear height as possible. This is necessary given the dispersion qualities of the tape. As a master of dispersion of high frequencies in the linear plane, it is less capable of expanding high frequencies in the vertical plane. This is where the dome tweeter is excellent and why the dome should be placed lower than the ribbon in this scenario.

In short: keep the dome tweeter close to the midrange woofer and the ribbon as close to ear height as possible.

Wide dispersion

By designing the drivers for wide dispersion, it makes Dali speakers easy to integrate into any room, delivering smooth, well-integrated sound for a wider listening position.

This technology is perfect for the Phantom S-80, since it is always mounted against a wall.

Working with off-axis optimization ensures that the listener has a great listening point where the soundstage is perfect, but also ensures high quality sound outside of the central listening point.

By optimizing the audio signal for off-axis distribution, both the direct and reflected signals will have the same high quality. This means having consistently high quality sound, across a much wider listening area.

Even dispersion across a wide range of listening angles ensures smooth, even energy distribution throughout the room, which is another crucial factor for coherent, well-balanced tonality.
